Antti Utriainen’s musical path began with classical piano at the age of seven and has since travelled through jazz, rock, soul, progressive music, improvisation and composition.

Growing up in Espoo, Finland, Utriainen became increasingly drawn to jazz and rock during his teens. Improvisation soon became a central part of his musical identity, eventually leading him to professional studies in pop and jazz music in Helsinki, where he graduated as a jazz pianist. His background also includes studies in classical composition and the analysis of orchestral music.

As a pianist, organist and keyboardist, Utriainen has worked in a wide variety of settings, from jazz clubs and concert stages to recording studios and theatre productions. His playing reflects a broad musical background, combining jazz and improvisation with influences from soul, rock, progressive music and fusion.

Over the years, he has collaborated with numerous Finnish musicians and artists. Among the most significant chapters in his career has been his work with Finnish guitar legend Jukka Tolonen, with whom he toured and performed extensively. He has also worked with Niko Ahvonen & Tilanteen Herrat and in numerous other live and studio projects.

Composition and arranging have formed another important part of Utriainen’s work. He composes across a wide stylistic spectrum, ranging from jazz and rock to classically influenced music, and has written music and arrangements for his own ensembles as well as for recordings, theatre and film. His work often draws freely from different musical traditions rather than staying within a single genre.

 

As a bandleader, Utriainen released his debut album Antti Utriainen Trio in 2010, featuring Timo Tuppurainen on double bass and Tomi Saikkonen on drums. His second album, Antti Utriainen Expansion, followed in 2014 on Eclipse Music. The Antti Utriainen Trio has later returned to active performance with a renewed line-up and remains an important outlet for his own compositions and musical ideas.

In recent years, Utriainen’s work has increasingly expanded into music production and studio work. Alongside performing and composing, he works as a producer, arranger, recording musician and mixing engineer, often combining several of these roles within the same project.

Throughout his career, the common thread has been curiosity: an interest in sound, interaction, groove, improvisation and the possibilities that arise when different musical worlds meet.
